Dear Plaza Oaks Members:
As the majority of you know, Plaza Oaks has serious
financial challenges as a result of its tax burden (which is unchangeable), relatively low membership numbers (178 out of
a possible 800 homes in our membership boundary area), and the ongoing cost of maintaining a 50+ year old pool. Last March the Plaza Oaks Board made an arrangement to lease its tennis courts for several hours per day
to Ray Brown (dba EASI Academy) and Deb Kopp to conduct tennis lessons/clinics for both members and non-members. (This plan
was also presented and discussed at the 2012 annual meeting, at which a quorum was present.) They pay the pool $15 per day
for 22 days per month, which results in a $330 payment per month. That $330 payment
is a significant boost to the operating/maintenance budget of Plaza Oaks and is equivalent to 9+ additional memberships per
year ($3960.00). They pay for 22 days each month even though some months they
use fewer days than that and some months they use more—it is a good average, factoring in weather, school holidays and
cancellations. Allowing a tennis pro to use the courts to teach lessons is not
a new idea for Plaza Oaks. In fact, during the past 15 years, Plaza Oaks
has had several tennis pros teach lessons at the courts. However, this is the
first agreement to be formalized and is also by far the most profitable for the pool.
I have recently fielded several questions/concerns
regarding the tennis courts and EASI Academy and am taking this opportunity to inform the entire membership about the specifics
of the tennis program and leagues that use the Plaza Oaks courts. Ray Brown and
Jana Van Der Walt are tennis coaches and they are Plaza Oaks members. They provide
lessons to both members and non-members. If you are interested in taking lessons, please contact Ray at 571-268-2538 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Ray and Jana teach lessons at different
times during the day and use ONE COURT FOR LESSONS. Even if a lesson is going on, the other court is available for play and
Ray and Jana are happy for you to be there and they will make every effort to be sure that their lesson does not interfere
with your game. THEY USE
BOTH COURTS FROM 4-6 pm on MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, and FRIDAY and FROM 4-7 ON THURSDAYS. The board felt comfortable about both courts being reserved at those times because that is when the majority
of members are taking kids to after school activities and it was rare that the courts were ever in use. If you ever need both courts for a special event or occasion, please contact me or contact Ray and we will
make our best effort to accommodate you.
Deb Kopp, also a member, teaches tennis clinics
to members and non-members on Thursday and Friday mornings. If you are interested
in joining one of her clinics, please contact her at email@example.com or 832-419-5871.
The courts are also used for league play on alternate
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from August thru May. The teams are composed of
both members and non-members. Non-members pay a fee to play on the team and the
team membership allows them to use the courts ONLY for league play. The non-members
receive no other club privileges. The decision to allow non-members to be on
the Plaza Oaks tennis team was made approximately 10 years ago because there were not enough members to field a team. MEMBERS ARE given PREFERENCE for spots on the team, so if you are interested in joining
a team, please contact Mary Baird at 713-447-8163 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The schedule of EASI Academy students is currently
posted at the courts on the green board next to the entrance gate. The Board
has also requested that Deb Kopp and Mary Baird post their scheduled use of the courts on the board as well. There is also a court reservation sign up sheet available there as well if you care to reserve a court. The Board is working towards getting all of the aforementioned information onto the
